Changing the Service / Proxy Account, Password, or Domain Controller

Our applications use a proxy user account to actually make changes or updates to Active Directory. The end user needs no elevated permissions in Active Directory; all updates use the proxy account. We sometimes refer to this account as a "service" or "service / proxy" account though technically "service" is not correct; there is no actual service running. The service / proxy account must be delegated the permissions necessary to update user objects in Active Directory. Most organizations do require passwords of accounts with elevated permissions to be changed periodically. Or, you may find that you want to change the actual account name.

When you configure our applications, you also must specify the Active Directory domain controller and the DNS domain name of the Active Directory.

Changing the domain controller name, domain name, service / proxy account name, and the service / proxy account password are changed using the application's Configuration wizard. This program is found on the IIS Server on which the application is hosted in the application .\Configuration folder. In the example of Directory Update, by default it is found in the c:\inetpub\wwwroot\DirectoryUpdate\Configuration folder.

1. Ensure that you are logged on as a domain user that is a member of the IIS server's local Administrators group
2. Navigate to the c:\inetpub\wwwroot\DirectoryUpdate\Configuration folder (Or whichever folder holds the Configuration wizard.)
3. Select the Configuration.exe program, do a CTRL -> Right Click and choose "Run as Administrator" from the context menu 
4. You may need to click Yes on the User Account Control window
4. Select "Edit An Existing Domain Instance" and click Next 
5. Select the domain instance you want to edit and click Next (Usually, you will only see one.) 
6. On this screen, you can change the domain controller name, domain name, service account, and the service account password.
7. When you have updated the information you need to update, click "Test Directory Settings" and then click Next. 
8. On the licensing screen, you can put in your organization name and license key. Click Next when finished.
9. Click Finish to exit the wizard.          
If you receive an error saying that the Registry cannot be updated, ensure that you dod a CTRL -> Right Click and "Run As Administrator" to run the Configuration wizard.
